Earthquake Brace + Bolt Program 2025: Grants Now Open for California Homes

California homeowners know that earthquakes aren’t a matter of if—they’re a matter of when. Preparing your home today can save you thousands in repair costs tomorrow, and the Earthquake Brace + Bolt (EBB) Program is once again making it easier and more affordable to do just that.

Unfortunately, the state was weeks behind in announcing this year’s program start date and details, but now that the information is official, here’s what you need to know to take advantage of this valuable opportunity.

What Is the EBB Program?

The EBB Program provides financial assistance to help homeowners complete code-compliant seismic retrofits that strengthen older homes against earthquake damage. By bracing the crawl space and bolting the house to its foundation, a retrofit can prevent catastrophic shifting during a major quake.

Since its launch, more than 33,000 homes across California have been retrofitted through EBB grants—each one better protected against the next big shake.

Key Program Dates for 2025

📅 Registration Period: August 20 – October 1, 2025

This is the only window to apply. Once registration closes, homeowners will need to wait until the next cycle—so don’t miss your chance.

What’s New in 2025?

The 2025 EBB Program includes important updates designed to expand access:

  • Rental and investment properties are now eligible.
Landlords and investors can now protect their properties and tenants, not just primary residences.

  • Supplemental Grants (SG) for income-qualified households.
Owner-occupied homes with annual household incomes of $89,040 or less may be eligible for additional financial assistance on top of the standard grant.

  • Grants up to $3,000.
This funding can significantly offset retrofit costs, making seismic safety more accessible to more Californians.

Why Retrofit Your Home?

A code-compliant retrofit is one of the smartest investments you can make in your property. Retrofitted homes are:

  • More resilient during earthquakes – reducing the risk of collapse or costly structural damage.

  • More affordable to insure – some insurance providers offer discounts for retrofitted homes.

  • More attractive to buyers and renters – safety improvements can be a strong selling point.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the Earthquake Brace + Bolt website and complete your registration during the open period (Aug. 20 – Oct. 1, 2025).

  2. If selected, you’ll receive instructions on hiring a contractor and completing your retrofit.

  3. Submit proof of the work to receive your grant reimbursement.
